Shopping for a New Vacuum

(And thinking I should take my old one here so everyone driving down Washington Boulevard can see it.)

We are in the market for a new vacuum, and I am looking for recommendations and suggestions.

We have had our current vacuum, the super cool Hoover EmPower, for almost four years.
I'm thinking I paid about seventy-five bucks for it.
I really really really like not running out of or having to buy vacuum bags.
I have wanted a Dyson for years. . . ever since I first saw one in a Real Simple magazine.
But if I am going to pay $300 for a vacuum, I need to know it is going to last a long time.
I like the idea of a lightweight Oreck vacuum that Rachel and Lucy could carry up and down the stairs.
But I don't think I would like a vacuum without a hose and attachments to clean the edges.
I think we are fairly rough on vacuums, (Derrick does a lot of the vacuuming at our house.)
But I think our current Hoover vacuum outlasted my brother's by some three years and eleven months.

Any ideas?

We have a dyson and we have had it about 3 years. It still feels brand new. It works great. I could not live with out atachments. So this works great. My mom and dad bought one over a year ago and they love it too.

Go Dyson, or go home!! Ok, not really but, I do love my dyson. My favorite is DC25. It retails for $499. I wouldn't pay more than $325. I have seen a few on KSL. I do have to admit that I don't love how you use the hose. It is a little difficult, much better than the Kirby. You never need to buy bags or filters:)! Good luck on the find, I am sure you will love whatever you find as long as its not a KIRBY!!

Em I also have a Dyson and love it! I've had it for almost 5 years now and it still works like new. Lincoln uses it all the time (so not only is it not that heavy, but it can take beating). If you wash out the filters twice a year it will stay like new.

My vote is totally different. I have had a lot of vacuums, and my favorite by far has been a $55 dirt devil. (The Dirt Devil Breeze Bagless to be exact!) No bags, just a filter to bang out every once in a while and it was only $55 (did I mention that already?) I've wanted a Dyson too, but hell who wants to spend that kind of money when there are soooooo many better things to spend it on. I think this little dirt devil sucks in a good way better than any other vacuum I've had. I didn't even feel guilty when I bought a second one to put upstairs so I didn't have to carry it up the stairs. I have one for the bakery too. Just my cheap opinion!

go straight to costco and buy a dyson. do not pass go. i hear orecks are great but they have a bag. you'd be surprised how often you empty the container when you have a good vaccuum. seriously. get a dyson!!! it will last forever. the cleaning tools are super awesome and accessible. you will not regret your purchase.

I have to disagree. I really don't like the Dyson's. A couple of my family members have them, and that's what we use to clean the office, but I would choose an electrolux over it anyday. It does take bags, and it is heavier, but I think I works better by far. And I've been told they are one of the easiest on carpet. (meaning they don't shred it, they just suck stuff out of it).

I have Dyson animal on the ball, and LOVE it! I love how quick and easy it is to use the hose and attatchments. I was lucky though, and knew someone who works for Dyson and got mine of the friends and family discount. I don't think I would have paid full price for it. BUT, if you have berber carpet, do not get that vacuum. We had berber at our old house, and the vacuum ripped up the carpet more than once. My mom doesn't have a problem with her regular Dyson though, so maybe its just the animal? My MIL has a Kirby, and she said that she thinks that my Dyson works better than the Kirby.

I hear the Dyson's get terrible reviews at consumer reports. But so did my camera and I love it.

We have a self propelled hoover windtunnel (with a bag, because those cannisters are yuck), it's going on ten years, the self propelled switch has gone out once, but after ten years of being beat to #@!!, it still sucks like a charm.

I'm in your same boat -- trying to decide between the Dyson and Oreck. My parents have had Orecks for a long time. They are super lightweight, and come with that handy portable vacuum too. But I can't go to the store without eying the Dysons. I would LOVE one, but $300 to $400 on a vacuum is a bit hard to swallom. Can't wait to hear what you decide.

I think this is hilarious. I posted a similar post a couple of years ago and got like a bizillion comments. People obviously have opinions about vacuums. And since I'm opinionated, I'll share mine too.
I too was thinking about buying a dyson, but didn't want to shell out the cash so I went on a hunt. I found a vacuum at Wal-mart (which I hate, but that's a post for another day) for like $130. It's similar to the dyson, and has the 5 year suction warranty just like the dyson does. The attachments are simple, but they rock, and I LOVE the wand. It is SO MUCH BETTER than the dyson's. The brand is Infinity. It is heavier than the lightweight dyson though, and does not have a swivel head, but I love my vacuum. It is also bagless, which I think is a must. There you go. That's my 2 cents.

I have heard that the dyson is not worth the money and hoover works just as well. I have a kenmore vacuum - blue - and I love it. I have had it for about four years. Orecks are terrible. My friend has one and complains about it constantly. The repairs are ongoing and expensive. Good Luck

Dyson all the way. we love ours and it's incredibly satisfying to see how much dirt it is picking up. we bought ours from bed bath and beyond and used a few 20% off coupons for it.

My Dad has the Dyson and they LOVE it! They tell everyone what a great job it does. My mom has an Oreck and she hates it I have used it and they aren't really that light

I tried a Dyson out one time and it was really heavy and bulky and I didn't like it at all.

My cleaning lady in Virginia had one from Sears that she really liked...Sears brand and one of those with the separate thing you pull behind...does that make sense?

However that being said, I think personal preference plays a big part in vacuum selection because I have the same one you and Sam had (how weird...it was on consumerreports.com I guess that explains it) and I don't like it and haven't since day one. In fact, it's in our basement not getting used since I'm using the one that came with the house, so if you need a vacuum to use until you get a new one you are more than welcome to use ours.

And I love that you posted a picture of that vacuum store here! I always think it is so funny when I drive by.

Wow. I sure didn't know there were so many Dyson owners out there! I don't know how I could go with anything else after those overwhelming endorsements. Now I will start hunting for a good price. . .

And, Paul, you are welcome to our old vacuum. It still has some life left in it. Enough for a bachelor pad.

I think you should go with central vacuuming UNLESS you own a hamster, then don't do central because it's hard to get the hamster out of the hose when you accidentally suck it up.

I don't currently own a vacuum, and I am looking for a free one, so if you hate yours, I'll take it.

LOOOOVE my Dyson!! In fact, when we build our house I don't know that I'll even do central vac because I sort of hate the idea of the looong hoses. That's how much I love it!

Looks like lots of people love the Dyson! US TOO! James is the vacuum king. He researched all over the place when we got ours. We got a swinging deal at Kohls. Watch for a sale on them and then make sure you find a 30% off code with the free shipping...it was an awesome deal!

And...I love this place in Ogden. We drive by there once in a while when we're in town...very 'eye' catching!
